Akron Bar Law Week committee seeking new members

As members of Summit County’s legal profession gear up to take part in this year’s Law Week activities, the committee responsible for making it all possible has already begun looking ahead to next year.

On May 25, the Akron Bar Association’s Law Week committee will meet at the bar association at noon to discuss ideas for 2017.

“Law Week gives the legal profession a chance to shine a positive light on itself by showing that we as lawyers are active and strongly interested in improving our Akron community,” said sole practitioner Angelina Gingo, who has chaired the Law Week committee two years in a row. “We are looking to add new events to the organization’s Law Week celebrations.”

In 2016, the number of planned celebrations was scaled down from previous years and the annual Race Judicata was eliminated. Gingo is hoping to breathe new life into next year’s Law Week by possibly adding social gatherings.

In order to make the goal a reality, she said the committee needs more people to join, including someone willing to take on the role of vice chair.

Gingo said the Law Week committee does not require as big of a time commitment as some of the other committees and sections at the Akron Bar Association.

It generally holds an organizational meeting during the fall and meets monthly starting in January to plan Law Week.

“The Law Week committee is important to the bar association because it helps us set the stage to honor our members and the profession,” said C. Allen Nichols, executive director of the Akron Bar Association.

“We welcome people from all areas of the profession, including court staff that might be looking for ways to volunteer,” said Gingo, who opened the Gingo Law Office in 2015.

“The committee especially welcomes young lawyers and law students who are looking for ways to get involved in the bar association,” said Gingo, who also serves as vice chair of the women in law section. “You do not have to be a member for ten or 20 years to meaningfully contribute to the bar association and its committees. We also value the opinions of more senior members that know the history of the association and can help us direct the future in a very valuable way.”
