Bipartisan legislation recently introduced in the Ohio Senate could help the outreach efforts of the state director of Veteran Services in alerting veterans to information about benefits and special programs, according to a sponsor of the bill.
“It is critical that our state government take action and assist Ohio veterans in obtaining the benefits they deserve,” said Columbus Sen. Hearcel Craig, a Democrat.
He and Sen. Terry Johnson, R-McDermott, have sponsored Senate Bill 39, which would allow the display of veteran benefits and services posters in workplaces to “provide our veterans with information they may not have known beforehand about some of the vital and life-changing support available to them,” the lawmaker said during a Senate Armed Services, Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee hearing of the bill.
According to analysis of the bill by the Ohio Legislative Service Commission, SB 39 would require the state Commerce director, in consultation with the director of Veterans Services, to create a veterans’ benefits and services poster which would be provided free-of-charge to any employer who requests it for display on the employer’s premises.
The legislation directs the commerce director to include information about the following topics in the poster:
• Department of Veterans Services’ programs, contact information and website;
• the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs veterans crisis hotline;
• substance abuse and mental-health treatment programs;
• educational, workforce and training resources;
• tax benefits and exemptions;
• availability of Armed Forces designation on Ohio driver’s license or identification card;
• unemployment benefits;
• legal services; and
• availability of any other benefit or service for veterans the directors determine should be included.
Craig said the posters would include a multitude of information and offer key resources veterans rely on every day for support.
“All veterans in Ohio made the unwavering decision to serve our country in unprecedented and unpredictable circumstances,” he continued. “We must be equally committed to seeing that they receive these benefits which are crucial to their growth and prosperity after completing their period of service.”
Craig said encouraging workplaces to acquire and prominently display the informational posters allows businesses to show their support for their veteran employees, in addition to ensuring that all veterans know about the benefits available to them.
“Veteran benefits posters will be an important step in providing for the physical and mental well-being of veterans and supporting their future economic success,” the lawmaker said.
Six senators have co-sponsored SB 39, which awaits further consideration by the committee.
