As a junior in high school, Myra Torain Embry did an internship at the Cuyahoga County Witness Victim Service Center at the justice center in Cleveland, where she became familiar with domestic violence proceedings and gained an understanding of the assistance provided to survivors.
“I already had a general interest in the law at the time, but seeing the inner workings of the justice system made it even more intriguing and convinced me that law school was the right choice,” said Embry.
After obtaining her bachelor’s degree in political science from Spelman College in Atlanta, she returned to northeast Ohio, earning her juris doctor from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1993.
Embry spent the first seven years of her career as a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, before moving to the housing division of the Cleveland Municipal Court, where she served as a magistrate for over 25 years.
Late last year, she started a new role as a full-time magistrate to Akron Municipal Court Judge Annalisa Stubbs Williams.
“It was a great opportunity to expand my legal knowledge,” said Embry, who served as chief magistrate in the housing division of the Cleveland Municipal Court for the last four years. “Most of the subject matter that I was handling in Cleveland involved housing-related civil and criminal matters.
“I am really enjoying learning new areas of law and becoming more involved with the Akron legal community,” said Embry, who was sworn in by Judge Williams on Nov. 4, 2025.
“Magistrate Embry brings decades of legal experience and combines a strong work ethic with a confident can-do mindset,” said Judge Williams. “I am grateful to have Magistrate Embry as a member of my personal staff.”
A member of the Akron Bar Association, Embry moved to Summit County over ten years ago.
She said she’s looking forward to gaining new experience at Akron Municipal Court.
“I’ve been a public servant for over two decades in Cleveland and now I’m hoping to use those skills in the county where I live,” said Embry, adding she also enjoys reading, hiking and exploring new cuisine in her spare time.
“My plan for the immediate future is to continue to enhance my legal skills and knowledge so that I may assist Judge Williams, the court and my community as best as I can and to continue to enjoy life, family and friends,” said Embry.
