The second annual race and walk as part of Summit County’s Italian Festival in downtown Akron July 9 will benefit The Andrea Rose Teodosio Foundation.

“Il Palio Del Drappo Verde e Rosso,” a 5K race and 1-mile walk start at 8 a.m.

Race day registration & race packet pick-up will be held from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. at Lock 3 Park, 200 S. Main Street. Participants must report at least 15 minutes prior to start. The race route goes through downtown Akron and surrounding areas. Runners will start on Main Street at University Street and finish on Main Street at Church Street. Walkers will line up behind the runners and start after the runners are underway.

The festival committee decided to allow the proceeds to go the foundation, established in the memory of Andrea, who died skiing in February. The foundation’s goal is to help provide support for those in need in the community and to provide scholarships to area students seeking to improve themselves through the pursuit of higher education.

“Last year was the first year for the Festival 5K and Andrea helped out a great deal with the race behind the scenes but didn’t run because of a conflict in her schedule,” her mother, Judge Linda Tucci Teodosio said. “The race this year will be the day after what would have been her 23rd birthday.”

Teodosio said that she and her husband and Andrea’s father, Judge Tom Teodosio have worked on the race since its inception last year. They’ve been part of the festival for six years, and have worked on its wine tasting throughout that time.

Event co-chair Carol Peter, Andrea’s aunt and godmother, said based on the number already registered for the race, and by the number who joined the Facebook page created for the event, she is anticipating a very good crowd.

Members of the Teodosio and Tucci family all plan to participate, Peter said. “It is neat the family is saying they’ll run,” she said. “We may not be fast, but we’ll do it.”

Other lawyers who are working on the race include Jon Oldham, Rob McCarty, Mike Ciccolini, Joe Fantozzi, Dave Lombardi and Rocco Yeargin, Linda Teodosio said. “Additionally, Christine Pololli-Stires, Amy Fletcher, Lisa Hawes, Carol Peter, Emily Shand, Jack and Amy DeLeo, Chris Teodosio and Don Ursetti are helping with various aspects of the race.

“There will be numerous other volunteers needed for the day of the race,” she said.

Some of these participants, plus others from the legal community, surprised the Teodosios by showing up to the Cleveland Half Marathon last month with “Team Teodosio” T-shirts.

“It was an amazing surprise to both of us,” Linda Teodosio said of the idea generated by Judge Lynne Callahan.

“Andrea was running again at the time of her death and planning to run the (Akron) Roadrunner with us in September,” Teodosio said.

“Running has been therapeutic for both of us in dealing with our loss and we were so touched and inspired by the support we received from our fellow runners.

“We were given Team Teodosio shirts as well and they made sure that neither of us were ever running alone.

“We will, of course, be running in (the Il Palio Del Drappo Verde e Rosso 5K Race) and I plan to wear my Team Teodosio shirt again at that time.”
