A couple of little things

Neither of the following items would fill an entire column, but you need to know them both.

One. You can pin a website to the home page of your smartphone or tablet just like an app icon, with a little effort. But then a website (like you firm’s) will always be one tap away. Here’s how.

Android: Launch the Chrome browser, and navigate to the website you want to pin to your home page. Tap the menu button, and then tap “add to homescreen.” Enter a name for the shortcut and there you are. Tapping the icon takes you right to the page without a browser interface.

iOS: Open Safari and navigate to the web page. Tap the “share” button, name the shortcut when prompted, then tap “add to homescreen.” Tapping the icon loads the web page into Safari.

Windows devices other than phones: these pages will get pinned to the taskbar. Open Internet Explorer to the web page that you want. Pull up the app bar by right clicking on the page. Tap the star icon, enter a name for the shortcut and then click “pin to start.”

For Windows phones, a similar procedure. Open the website in IE. Tap the “more…” button, and then tap “pin to start.” Both types of devices support live tiles.

Two. Microsoft is in beta development for a new document management and collaboration platform designed specifically for law firms and legal departments.

It will be called Matter Center for Office 365 and obviously works with all of the Office 365 programs.

Microsoft says that the new platform will support cloud storage using One Drive, with 1 TB of storage and full data synchronization; sharing, collaboration, and tracking of documents; “robust” search, which includes search in Outlook and Word; integrated document management, with drop and drag capabilities; and a full range of access and permission controls.

Matter Center for Office 365 is available in a limited preview. Interested customers can learn more about participating in a beta program at http://www.microsoft.com/mattercenter.

Thanks to the inestimable Robert Ambrogi for the tip.
