U.S. Court of Federal Claims Judge Ryan T. Holte has rescheduled the court’s plans to hold oral argument at The University of Akron School of Law.
The hearing was supposed to take place on Feb. 3, but a severe winter storm canceled the event.
It’s now going to be held Friday, March 25 at the C. Blake McDowell Law Center in the David and Ann Amer Brennan Courtroom.
Judge Holte, who serves as jurist-in-residence professor of law at Akron Law will hear four cross-motions in limine in the case of Spectre v. United States, No. 16-932, which involves disputes over patent licensing agreements with NASA.
It’s the first time Akron Law has ever hosted the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.
“We are honored to host the United States Court of Federal Claims hearing on March 25 in our Brennan courtroom,” said Akron Law Dean Emily Janoski-Haehlen. “I cannot thank the Honorable Judge Holte enough for making this experience available to our students and the Akron legal community.
“We were all disappointed when the hearing was canceled due to the winter storm in early February, but Judge Holte, recognizing the value of this educational opportunity for our students was able to reschedule the hearing to ensure it was held at Akron Law. Judge Holte is a valued member of our faculty and I hope we can continue to host hearings of his court at Akron Law each year.”
“This in-person public hearing will provide our students, faculty, alumni and members of the legal community with the rare chance to witness a federal trial court handle evidentiary disputes pertaining to expert witness testimony, damages and patent licensing agreements,” said Alisa Benedict O’Brien, assistant dean for career services and strategic initiatives at Akron Law.
“Anytime we are able to have an in-person hearing at the law school, it presents a unique learning opportunity for our students, alumni and local attorneys to broaden their legal knowledge.”
Judge Holte took his seat on the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in the summer of 2019.
He previously served as associate professor of law, David L. Brennan Endowed Chair in Law (the Brennan Chair) and was the director of Akron Law’s Center for Intellectual Property Law and Technology.
The March 25 event gets underway at 9 a.m. with a light breakfast in the Common. Oral argument begins at 10 a.m. in the Brennan Courtroom (Room 180) and is expected to last approximately four hours.
Students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the public are invited to attend.
